When preparing for a presentation or speaking in public, it is good to keep in mind how our brain works. According to Dr. John Medina, the human brain is a pattern recognition machine. Our brain likes to be able to predict with reasonable accuracy what is going to happen next, so we unconsciously scour the sensory landscape trying to find patterns.
I’m running for the Freshman Council next Wednesday. So, how can I ocmevore my fear of public speaking? I have to give out a speech in the front of 700 freshmen!! How can I force myself relaxing and my heart beat in a normal pace. I know I have to practice, practice, practice. Please help me. I do not your ridiculous answers like practice or do your homework You have to explain more details! Please tell me your experience of overcame your fear of public speaking! Thanks
Nancy
Public speaking is one of those fears that can feel so overwhelming. The truth is that your fear of public speaking for your brain is so real that your basal ganglia actually starts to create a fear based Iwas “not” thinking that we would continue with the current solution in parallel with starting the POA solution … we would just move directly into the POA solution. environment when you start to speak- it shortens your breath, expands your blood vessels and starts to make your heart palpitate.
Now I am sure there are several things you do really well that for your friends would give them the same reaction speaking does for you.
So here are a few things you can do:
1. Remember it is not ABOUT you; it is about the value you add for that audience. This group isn’t voting on you but rather what they believe you will be able to do for them. Keep your energy focused on them.
2. Take a deep breath (all the way to your toes) and slowly let it out. This “resets” your brain and stops that chemical flood that causes your breath to become short and your heart to race.
3. When you get up to speak pick one warm set of eyes to talk to. Talk just to that person. Then when you are comfortable seek another person out and make eye contact and speak to that person. This way your brain doesn’t see a “crowd” but instead sees one person.
4. Talk to them like you would a good friend over coffee. Don’t try to impress them, wow them or win them over. All of those are about you and focus the energy on you. Keep your energy focused on them.
Lastly, of course, practice. Not so you have a memorized speech but so your brain is not so worried about what to say that it can’t focus in the moment.
let me know how it goes! You sound like a very sincere person who wants to make a difference
