Embracing Curiosity and Building Resilience: A Personal Journey
Embracing Curiosity and Building Resilience: A Personal Journey
April 7, 2025
What is the importance of embracing curiosity?
When I was in sixth grade, I asked my teacher what I thought was an insightful question about monarch butterflies. Her response? “That is the stupidest thing I have heard. Sit down and shut up.” Why didn’t she embrace my curiosity? We were learning about monarch butterflies, and I couldn’t understand how they kept multiplying if they had such a short life span. Living in Minnesota, I was curious how we saw monarch butterflies each season if they all died at the end of the season. Did they burrow for the winter? Did they fly somewhere else? My question was met with ridicule.
In that moment, I could have shrunk inside and felt stupid. Instead, I stood my ground and said, “It still doesn’t make sense to me, so there must be more to this.” The next year, National Geographic published a story about how monarch butterflies migrate each year to Spain and return.
The key takeaway? I didn’t let her response define me, even though she was in a position of authority. I went home and continued to question and seek answers with my family. This embracing curiosity has stayed with me and is a large part of my personal resilience. I refuse to be boxed in by what is and instead explore what can be. I seek validation from within rather than from others, as people can respond negatively when they can’t see the possibilities you envision.
Building Resilience Through Curiosity
Curiosity has always been a driving force in my life. It pushes me to explore beyond the obvious and to question the status quo. This mindset has been instrumental in building my resilience. When faced with challenges or negative responses, I choose to look within for validation and continue to pursue what I believe is possible.
